An awkward project made easy with SDL OpenExchange apps

SDL OpenExchangeThe other day I was asked to translate a 400-word file on asthma with the client’s translation memory (TM) and termbase. Deliverable format: ttx. No big deal, I thought, it shouldn’t take longer than an hour or so.

But when the project arrived in my inbox, I found a source language .doc, a .ttx to work on, five files belonging to a Workbench TM and a bilingual Excel glossary. It would take some time to upgrade the TM to an .sdltm, create a new Multiterm termbase and import the Excel file. Read more…

I’m a great fan of IntelliWebSearch, a time-saving method for performing Internet terminology searches. Basically, it’s a series of keyboard-based macros that lets you click a word in any Windows application and go straight to a website that you’ve defined in your search settings using a short-cut. It was created by Michael Farrell, an Italian-English translator. Read more…

However, some links that are shared are hardly worth the space they take up – all 140 characters of it – and so it’s important to spot the ones that aren’t reliable or actually hinder your searches. How to prepare (and translate) an SmPC

EMAThe European Medicines Agency has just added a section called “How to prepare an SmPC” to its website. The aim of the new section is to help applicants include quality information in a clear and concise way when submitting a Summary of Product Characteristics. As translators, the section provides a useful new resource for enhancing our understanding of the SmPC, although unfortunately it’s only available in English. Read more…
