A translator’s conversion to a mechanical keyboard

FilcoSince the Typing Tips for Translators webinar last February, several people have asked me which keyboard I use. The answer is a Filco Majestouch-2. But actually, I’ve only been using this mechanical keyboard for about six months. Before that, I belonged to the vast majority (97%) of translators who use a membrane keyboard.

How to align any EU legislation in any two EU languages

EU_flagsBy now, you’ve probably read about the new European Union Clinical Trials Regulation that will be replacing Directive 2001/20/EC. I wrote about its implications for translators here, and looked at the new terminology it brings here. The good news for translators is that it’s already officially translated from English into the other 23 working languages of the European Union. All you need to do is align your source and target language versions and you’ll be equipped with a validated translation of the CT Regulation. Read more…

SDL Trados Studio 2015 and real-time preview

Real-time previewSDL Trados Studio 2015 was released with a new file type for MS Word .docx, which I discussed in a blog post on new features for old hands. The file type was a technical preview, with improved target file saving mechanisms and compatibility with Word 2016 files. It’s still a work in progress, but the latest version, released a couple of weeks ago with CU3, brings a solution to a problem that many users – including me – have been suffering for years.
